The Emerald Foundation was created in 2017 by donors who wanted to benefit the local Whistler community. By creating a donor-advised fund at the Community Foundation of Whistler (CFOW), the donors created a vehicle through which they can give back to various community initiatives while remaining anonymous.

The Emerald Foundation donors identified a need for more space in the stretching area at Meadow Park Sports Centre. This was put forward to the RMOW to discuss the feasibility of enclosing the balcony area on the second floor of the building to create a new and larger stretching room.

“The Meadow Park Sports Centre is a wonderful facility that is growing in popularity. We wanted to fund the creation of a new, larger stretching area with the assurance that it would be available to all users at all times, without ever being used for private sessions or classes. Enclosing the balcony to create the new stretching room allowed for the expansion of the Cardio Room as well. This additional space will allow more community members to enjoy the facility.” ~Emerald Foundation Donor

This expansion has long been part of the plans for ongoing enhancements to this community facility. The $400,000 donation from the CFOW’s Emerald Foundation is a catalyst in getting these plans underway. Design concepts have been presented and construction is anticipated to begin in 2019.

The Community Foundation of Whistler offers many types of funds and can work with donors to create ways to help realize their charitable giving goals. The Foundation also helps by providing donors with knowledge about community needs and can provide ideas for projects to fund.

In the past year, the Emerald Foundation has also provided a gift to the Whistler Multicultural Festival, the Whistler Red Cross/Emergency Social Services Disaster Management Volunteer Team, a gift to Whistler Search and Rescue Society to purchase a new snowmobile rescue vehicle, and a gift to the Foundation’s Emergency Fund in support of families and individuals who are affected by disasters.

The Community Foundation of Whistler is the only local opportunity for donors to create a personal legacy that will give back to the community in their name year after year, forever. Donations to an endowment fund are permanently invested and professionally managed. The income generated supports local charities in the form of annual grants. The foundation currently manages 30 endowment funds covering a broad range of community life.
