Co-existing with Bears in the Callaghan

Following the construction of Whistler Olympic Park and the Callaghan Road, the roadsides were re-seeded with species such as clover, a favourite food for bears. Roadside bears have since become a large viewing attraction along the Callaghan Road and Highway 99.

Get Bear Smart Society identified this as a growing concern as more and more locals, visitors, and tour operators visit the area to view the bears. The society observed issues such as vehicles surrounding mothers with cubs and vehicles jams blocking the flow of traffic along the road.

With the support of an Environmental Legacy Grant from the Community Foundation of Whistler, along with other partners, the Get Bear Smart Society developed a set of bear-viewing guidelines for visitors and tour operators. The guidelines are being promoted through the use of a "Bear Viewing Guide" brochure and interpretive signs in the Whistler Olympic Park and along the road.
